Q: Will any bird use a bird house?

A: No. There are about 70 North American birds that will use a bird house or a platform. Please see our “Birds That Use Birdhouses” page for a list of many of the birds that will use a bird house.

Q: When buying a bird house, shouldn't it always have a perch for the bird to sit on?

A: No, ideally a bird house shouldn't have a perch. Although a bird could sit on it, a perch gives a predator something to grab on to when trying to enter the bird house and so makes it more unsafe.

Q: I have one bird house on my property and it's been there for years, but all I can attract are House Sparrows. How can attract another type of bird?

A: House Sparrows are very aggressive nesters and will fight off almost any other kind of bird for the bird house. If you have several bird houses on your property, you'll get some other types of birds since cavities aren't as scarce. So the answer is: Provide more bird houses! Better yet, provide bird houses that have an entry hole smaller than 1 ½ inches in diameter, as House Sparrows won't be able to squeeze through.

Q: I have bird houses, bird feeders, bird seed and a bird bath all on my property and I'm hardly getting any birds at all! What do I do?

A: It's possible that the landscape of your property doesn't provide a habitat that encourages birds to visit. Plant some native fruit-bearing trees and native shrubbery to make to the landscape more “bird friendly” - a neatly manicured lawn probably looks like a barren wasteland to a bird. Evergreens are good, and so are flowering plants. You don't have to spend a lot of money on this either – just gradually add some small trees and shrubs and you'll get your birds in time.
